The mornings are getting colder, the peaks are capped with snow and that means ski mountaineering season is approaching!  It is officially autumn and the first skimo race is less than two months away! Are you getting excited? We are too! Here’s a look at the Race Calendar as of now.  We’ll continue to add races as we get information from race directors.

The National Championships: This season, Nationals will consist of two race weekends.

  • Sunlight Mountain will hold both the Nationals Sprint and Individual races (as well as the World’s Team qualifiers) on January 5th-6th.
  • Aspen will hold the Teams National Championship race on March 2nd at the Audi Power of Four. The following day March 3rd, the Vertical National event will be held at Aspen.

ISMF World Championship: This season is World Championship year!  The event will occur March 9th–16th in Villars sur Ollons, Switzerland.  Racers must qualify for the USSMA World Championship Team and be a USSMA member to compete at ‘worlds’.  There are two qualifying race weekends for worlds.  More info

  • December 14th–15th, 2018 at Arapahoe Basin, Colorado – Vertical and Individual qualifiers
  • January 5th-6th, 2019 at Sunlight Mountain Resort, Colorado – Sprint and Teams qualifiers (teams qualifier is an individual race)

National Cup Series: For this season the National Cup Series will consist of a set of races that are meant to showcase the sport and promote its growth. At the end the series, the top three female and male competitors in each event will be recognized. All of the National Cup Series races found here are sanctioned by the USSMA.  We are still awaiting some applications, so the series schedule will be released prior to the season start.

A ‘sanctioned‘ race means that the USSMA will help ensure the race is up to speed following USSMA/ISMF standards and help elevate the quality of each event.

If you are a race director: it is recommended that you reach out the USSMA to inquire about sanctioning your race! Why you ask? Sanctioning will improve the quality of your event and could provide additional valuable resources, insight and promotion. If you are interested in holding a sanctioned race this season please contact USSMA and find more information here.

Youth Development Camp: We are proud to announce the third annual USSMA Youth Development Camp!  The one day camp will be held on Sunday, December 16th at Arapahoe Basin, Colorado and led by the US National Team Coach and 17/18 National Team athletes.  The camp is free and open to anyone under the age of 23 and will introduce young skiers to competitive ski mountaineering racing.  It is built around an ISMF sprint course and designed to “short-cut” a 14-20 year old skiers path to elite skimo technique.  Also this year the ISMF will be sending a technical delegate to assist and help promote the growth of the sport.  Mark your calendars for now and more details will be announced soon.

USSMA Membership: 2018/19 Membership sign up is now available!  If you’ve been a member in the past, you must renew your membership annually.  Additionally, if you aspire to qualify for the World Championship Team, participate in the National Race Series, or race in any Sanctioned race you must be a USSMA member.  NOTE: You will be assigned a NEW license number that you will need to use for registration at sanctioned races.

If you never been a USSMA member doing so will significantly enhance the capabilities of the USSMA to develop and grow the sport and support competitive and recreational racers everywhere. Help us learn more about membership by filling out the Athlete Advisory Committee membership survey.  We are also working on new member benefits such as coaching and gear discounts.  Stay tuned!

Athlete Advisory Committee: As the sport of Skimo continues to grow across the U.S., we want to make sure your voice as an athlete is heard! The USSMA Athlete Advisory Committee (AAC) has expanded this summer and is now composed of a diverse group of Skimo athletes from all over the country. These USSMA member athletes, elected by their member peers, hope to impartially review and represent the interests of all athletes. We invite all USSMA members and non-members to share your thoughts and concerns with the AAC about how to make this sport better in the U.S. Contact the AAC via email at or online. Please visit this page to fill out our first survey of the season!
